Stream 1 · Priced per visit

Auckland grass doesn’t take winter off.

Mowing here is a year-round roster, not a seasonal habit: fortnightly spring through autumn, and a 3–4 weekly run right through winter. Book a regular run for the best per-visit rate, or a one-off rescue when the section has got away on you, and expect that first visit to cost more. And if you have kikuyu, as most Auckland lawns do, the mow is only half the job: edging and garden-bed management are what keep it off the paths.

From $25 per mow Year-round roster Kikuyu is the default

Is this your stream?

Yes, when the grass is the job.

A regular fortnightly run, or a one-off for an overgrown section, pre-sale prep or a tenancy changeover. Both live in this stream; they just price differently. Regular customers get the best per-visit rate and a set roster; rescues are priced per job.

No, when the edges and beds are the job.

Hedges price by the job in hedge trimming, with arborists for anything over 2–3 metres. Weeding, garden beds, pruning and full section clearing run by the hour in garden maintenance. Don’t pay a mowing rate for garden work.

What a mow costs in Auckland

Priced per visit, by lawn size. Entry prices are aggressive, but check what is included before comparing.

MoneyHub Auckland guide

$40–$60+GST per visit

Small lawns $40–$55+GST, medium $45–$60+GST, large from $60+GST per visit. The per-visit benchmark for a standard suburban section.

Crewcut 2026 guide

$25–$100+ by lawn size

Small (under 200m²) $25–$50, medium $40–$70, large $60–$100+. Section size moves the price more than operator choice does.

Entry price and annual maths

From $25 per mow

Select Lawn Mowing advertises from $25 per mow. At $40/mow, a weekly roster runs about $2,080/year and a fortnightly roster about $1,040/year. Regular customers get the best per-visit rate.

Regular run vs one-off rescue

Regular run: the default.

Fortnightly spring through autumn, 3–4 weekly in winter. You get the best per-visit rate, a set roster, and (with franchises) backfill coverage when an operator is away. Crewcut, Jim’s, Green Acres, Select from $25, or Mowing West on a West Auckland subscription.

One-off rescue: priced per job.

Overgrown section, pre-sale, tenancy changeover. Expect significantly more per visit: overgrown grass needs multiple passes and cannot be cut to normal height in one go. Send photos so the quote reflects reality. Jim’s explicitly markets pre-sale and tenancy-changeover one-offs; Green Acres GO handles on-demand bookings.

Kikuyu: the mow is only half the job

Most Auckland lawns are kikuyu. It is fast-growing, drought-tolerant, and invasive into garden beds, paths and neighbouring sections. A mower alone does not manage it: left to itself, it walks past the edge of the lawn and into the beds.

Edging and garden-bed control belong in the service. Ask about both explicitly when you quote, not as an afterthought once the kikuyu is in the paths. If the beds have genuinely been lost to it, that is garden maintenance work by the hour, not part of a standard mow.

Choose by situation

You want it handled on autopilot.

Crewcut (HQ’d in Takapuna) for local depth, Jim’s for all-Auckland coverage, Green Acres to bundle with home services, Select from $25 for the budget entry, or Mowing West for the West Auckland subscription model.

The section has got away on you.

Jim’s explicitly markets pre-sale and tenancy-changeover one-offs, and Green Acres GO handles on-demand bookings. Expect a first-visit premium for multiple passes, and send photos upfront.

Lawn health, not just cutting.

Lawn Rite runs lawn-specialist regular rounds with fertilising and weed spraying add-ons. The right call when the lawn needs more than height management.

Lifestyle block or acreage.

Push-mower services are the wrong tool. Paramount Gardening handles ride-on, acreage and commercial grounds, priced by the hour: see garden maintenance.

Common mistakes

Comparing one-off prices against regular-run pricing: the first visit on an overgrown section always costs more, because overgrown grass needs multiple passes and cannot be cut to normal height in one go. The regular-run rate is the rate that matters.

Assuming mowing stops in winter: Auckland's mild humid climate keeps grass growing year-round, just slower. A 3–4 weekly winter roster still exists; going silent for months means a rescue job in spring, priced accordingly.

Fighting kikuyu with a mower alone: kikuyu is Auckland's most aggressive lawn grass and spreads into garden beds and paths. It needs edging and garden-bed management, not just mowing. Ask about it explicitly when you quote.

Not sending photos before a one-off quote: a rescue job is priced per job, and the quote should reflect the actual state of the section. Photos upfront beat a phone number that gets revised upward on site.

Not asking whether GST, edging and clipping removal are included: entry prices like “from $25” rarely tell the whole story. Crewcut notes GST treatment varies by operator.

Putting clippings in the general rubbish: Auckland transfer stations price green waste by weight ($24 for 0–30kg at WM East Tamaki). A big clearance disposed through general rubbish is the expensive way to do it; ask how clippings are handled.

FAQ

How much does lawn mowing cost in Auckland?

MoneyHub's Auckland guide puts small lawns at $40–$55+GST, medium at $45–$60+GST, and large from $60+GST per visit. Crewcut's 2026 guide runs $25–$50 for small lawns under 200m², $40–$70 medium, and $60–$100+ for large. Select Lawn Mowing advertises from $25 per mow. At $40/mow, a fortnightly roster costs about $1,040/year and a weekly roster about $2,080/year.

How often should I mow in Auckland?

Auckland's mild humid climate keeps grass growing year-round, fastest in spring and autumn, slowing but not stopping in winter. Typical frequency: every 7 days in spring, 7–10 in summer, 10–14 in autumn, 3–4 weeks in winter. A fortnightly roster spring through autumn suits most homes.

What is kikuyu, and why does it matter?

Kikuyu is Auckland's most common warm-season lawn grass: aggressive, fast-spreading, and invasive into garden beds and paths. A mower alone does not manage it. Ask operators about edging and garden-bed control as part of the service, not just the mow.

Regular run or one-off?

A regular run gets the best per-visit rate and a set roster: fortnightly spring through autumn, roughly three-weekly in winter. A one-off rescue (overgrown section, pre-sale, tenancy changeover) is priced per job and costs significantly more per visit, because overgrown grass needs multiple passes. Jim's explicitly markets pre-sale and tenancy-changeover one-offs; Green Acres GO handles on-demand bookings.

Franchise or independent?

Franchises (Green Acres, Jim's, Crewcut, Lawn Rite) bring systems, insurance, backfill coverage when an operator is away, and metro-wide reach. Independents (Select, Mowing West, Sharper Cut) offer a direct relationship and often sharper pricing. For a standard suburban section, quote both: the best value is usually whoever already runs your suburb on a set day.

The short version

For most Auckland homes: regular runs go to Crewcut, Jim’s, Green Acres, Select or Mowing West; overgrown one-offs go to operators who quote from photos, with Jim’s and Green Acres GO explicit about that work. Mention kikuyu and ask for edging and garden-bed management as part of the service, keep a winter roster going because Auckland grass does not stop, and judge operators on the regular-run rate, not the rescue price. Lifestyle blocks go to Paramount Gardening by the hour.
