Auckland/Lawn mowing & garden

What does the section need?

“Lawn mowing and garden maintenance” is really three different markets with three different price logics: mowing by the visit, hedges by the job, garden work by the hour. Pick the stream that matches the section, then compare providers inside it. Auckland’s year-round growth and aggressive kikuyu run through all three.

Not sure which stream?

Just the grass.

If it is a regular run or a one-off rescue of an overgrown section, that is mowing, priced per visit by lawn size. Regular customers get the best per-visit rate and a set roster; one-offs cost more, because overgrown grass needs multiple passes and cannot be cut to normal height in one go.

The edges and everything else.

Hedges price by the job in hedge trimming; weeding, beds, pruning and section clearing run by the hour in garden maintenance. Bundling garden jobs into one visit is usually cheaper than separate bookings, and hedges over 2–3 metres need an arborist, not a mower crew.

How the streams compare

Stream Pricing model Price range Best when
Mowing Per visit $25–$100 per mow Regular runs, one-off rescues, pre-sale prep
Hedge trimming Per job $80–$500+ Hedges by scale; tall work to arborists
Garden maintenance Per hour $30–$80/hr Weeding, beds, pruning, section clearing

Auckland realities that change the job

The grass never really stops. Auckland’s mild humid climate keeps lawns growing year-round, fastest in spring and autumn, slowing but not stopping in winter. A 3–4 weekly winter roster still exists. Going silent for months means a rescue job in spring, priced accordingly.

Kikuyu is the default, and it is aggressive. Most Auckland lawns are kikuyu: fast-growing, drought-tolerant, and invasive into garden beds, paths and neighbouring sections. A mower alone does not manage it. Edging and garden-bed control need to be part of the service, not an afterthought.

Section size sets the mow price. Crewcut’s 2026 guide sizes lawns as small (under 200m²) $25–$50, medium $40–$70, large $60–$100+; MoneyHub’s Auckland guide runs small $40–$55+GST, medium $45–$60+GST, large from $60+GST. State the section size when you quote, because it moves the price more than the operator choice does.

Green waste disposal is weight-based. Auckland transfer stations price green waste by weight: $24 for 0–30kg at WM East Tamaki, $49 per load at GreenCycle Penrose. A big section clearance disposed through general rubbish is the expensive way to do it; ask operators how they handle clippings.
