Christchurch rubbish removal, decided in one page.

Use full-service when the load is heavy or you want it gone without lifting. Use a skip when the job spans days and you can load it yourself. Use EcoDrop’s free list first: whiteware, e-waste, paint and batteries cost nothing to drop.

Full-service from $124 Skips $255–$680 published EcoDrop free list included
Heavy or bulky

Full-service junk removal

A crew comes to you: lifting, loading, hauling, disposal. The right call for fridges, pianos, mattresses, estate and hoarder cleanouts, or when you have no trailer and no time. Most operators sort for recycling before landfill.

Renovation or multi-day

Skip bins and skip bags

You load it over days. Cheapest per cubic metre if you can do the lifting, but waste type matters: general, green and hardfill are priced separately, and contamination gets penalised hard.

The right stream first

EcoDrop free drops and specialist recycling

Whiteware, scrap metal, e-waste, paint, batteries and household hazardous waste are free at Christchurch’s EcoDrop centres. Check the free list before paying anyone to take it.

What it costs in Christchurch

Christchurch’s dump fees are among the highest in NZ; operators say around 70% of a skip’s price is the tip fee. That makes choosing the right stream the single biggest cost decision.

From $124

Full-service junk removal

Junkman publishes a from-$124 full-service entry point, with a disposal surcharge of roughly $25 per 100kg on top. Per-item operators price a menu: whiteware $65–$115, couches $60–$155, mattresses $99–$209, plus a ~$15 travel charge.

Roughly $255–$680

Skip bins

Published Christchurch prices incl. GST: 2m³ hardfill from $255, 3m³ general $414, 7m³ maxi $480, 7.5m³ general $599, 9m³ general $680. Operators note around 70% of skip cost is dump fees: Christchurch’s per-tonne rates are among NZ’s highest.

$458.69/t general, big free list

DIY EcoDrop run

EcoDrop transfer stations (from 1 July 2026): general waste $458.69/t with an $18.40 minimum, green waste $152.60/t, hardfill $123.17/t. Whiteware, e-waste, paint, batteries and hazardous waste: free in domestic quantities.

Choose by job type

One or two heavy items.

Per-item pickup: Rubbish Pickup NZ publishes a menu ($65–$115 whiteware, $99–$209 mattresses) with a $14.95 travel charge. Cheaper than a full truck callout for a single fridge or couch.

Whole garage, estate or hoarder cleanout.

Full-service with sorting: Junkman, General Junk or Christchurch Rubbish. General Junk’s two-truck system sorts recyclables before landfill, which cuts the effective tip cost.

Renovation running over days.

A skip in the right waste stream: Super Skips for transparent pricing, Cheaper Skip Hire for budget, Pete’s Skips for tight driveways, Container Waste for big commercial jobs. Never mix hardfill with general waste.

Garden waste only.

The kerbside green bin goes weekly to Living Earth’s composting plant. For a big clearance, a green skip ($343–$448 published) beats general-waste prices by a wide margin.

Christchurch rules that change the real cost

EcoDrop’s free list is the first move. Christchurch’s transfer stations take whiteware, scrap metal, e-waste, paint, batteries, gas bottles and household hazardous waste free in domestic quantities. Paying a crew to haul any of that is paying twice.

The tip is weight-based and not cheap. From 1 July 2026, general refuse is $458.69/t with an $18.40 minimum; green waste $152.60/t; hardfill $123.17/t. Sorting green and hardfill out of a general load is where the savings live.

Kerbside is not the catch-all. CCC red rubbish bags are $23 for five (50L); the green bin goes weekly to Living Earth’s composting plant. Asbestos has its own rules: wrapped, Metro Place only, weekdays only. Hazardous waste never belongs in a kerbside bin.

Common mistakes Christchurch homeowners make

Mixing hardfill with general waste: a clean 2m³ hardfill skip runs about $295; contaminated, it can hit $600+. Sort, or pay double.

Paying full-service prices for a light, trailer-able load when EcoDrop’s free list covers whiteware, e-waste, paint and batteries.

Putting paint, chemicals, batteries or gas bottles in kerbside bins. They belong at EcoDrop, free, and never in the red bag.

Booking the wrong skip waste type: general, green and hardfill are priced separately, and contamination surcharges are real.

Forgetting asbestos rules: it must be wrapped, goes to Metro Place EcoDrop only, weekdays only, at $732.49/t. Never in a skip.

Putting a skip on the berm or street without council approval. Placement on public land needs a permit.

FAQ

How much does rubbish removal cost in Christchurch?

Full-service starts around $124 with Junkman, plus a disposal surcharge of roughly $25 per 100kg; per-item operators charge $65–$115 for whiteware and $99–$209 for mattresses. Skips run about $255–$680 published incl. GST. DIY at EcoDrop is $458.69/t for general waste with an $18.40 minimum, but whiteware, e-waste, paint and batteries are free.

What is free at Christchurch transfer stations?

In domestic quantities: reusable goods, fridges and whiteware, scrap metal, batteries, paint, gas bottles, heat pumps, e-waste, waste oils and household hazardous waste, plus up to five clean tyres off rims. Check the free list before paying a removal crew to take any of it.

Who does same-day rubbish removal in Christchurch?

Junkman, Christchurch Rubbish and Rubbish Pickup NZ all take urgent jobs, though availability varies and most run Monday to Friday. Per-item operators suit “one thing, today” jobs; full clearances need a booked slot.

Skip or full-service?

Skip if you can do the lifting and the job spans days: it is the cheapest per cubic metre, but you carry the sorting and contamination risk. Full-service if the load is heavy, bulky, urgent, or you simply do not want to deal with it. Green-only loads suit the kerbside green bin or a green skip.

What should I ask before booking?

State the item types, approximate volume, access, and whether anything is hazardous, green waste, whiteware or e-waste. Ask whether the price includes labour, disposal, GST and weight limits, and for skips, confirm the waste type, because contamination is where the bill doubles.

The short version

For most Christchurch homes: check EcoDrop’s free list first; one or two heavy items go to Rubbish Pickup NZ’s per-item menu; full clearances go to Junkman, General Junk or Christchurch Rubbish; multi-day renovations go to a skip in the right waste stream from Super Skips, Cheaper Skip Hire, Pete’s Skips or Container Waste; garden waste goes in the green bin or a green skip. Sort your streams: in Christchurch, the tip fee is most of the bill.
