What’s the pest?
Pest control is really six different jobs with six different price logics. A wasp nest is a one-visit kill. Rodents are a programme with proofing. Ants and cockroaches only respond to a plan. Bed bugs take multiple visits, and borer is a structural job sold with a multi-year guarantee. Pick the pest; each stream has its own providers, its own prices, and its own rules.
Wasps
A nest in the hedge, the shed or the wall. Kill-the-nest job: one visit for reachable nests, a licensed operator for cavities, underground or height.
Rats & mice
Baiting, trapping and proofing, not a one-off. Properties backing onto reserves, waterways or red-zone land need ongoing cover, not a single visit.
Ants & cockroaches
Argentine ant colonies number in the thousands and German cockroaches rebound fast. One-off sprays hit surface workers only; the working model is treatment plus quarterly callbacks.
Bed bugs
Treatment must hit every life stage, eggs included, so established infestations nearly always need more than one visit. Budget for the second and third.
Borer
Older Christchurch timber homes: sub-floor and roof-void treatment during flight season, sold with a 5–10 year guarantee and a certificate of treatment.
Fleas & spiders
Fleas need the pet treatment and vacuuming running alongside the spray. Spiders are a seasonal exterior barrier job. Both are one-off treatments with prep.
Not sure which stream?
A single mouse or a small visible wasp nest can be a one-off. Multiple sightings, daytime rodent activity, or ants returning weeks after a spray means you are in programme territory: rodents, or ants and cockroaches. The one-off price does not hold on those sites.
Fleas plus carpet work suits a bundled operator like JAE; birds plus spiders suits MCC Property Services. And if the damage is in the timber itself, exit holes and frass, that is borer, a different stream entirely.

Christchurch realities that change the job
The council does not treat private land. Christchurch City Council handles pests and odours on public land. Rodents, wasps and borer on your section are the owner’s responsibility. There is no council callout for a private-land rat problem.
Red-zone fringe and reserves drive rodents. Properties backing onto reserves, waterways or red-zone land see persistent rodent pressure. A one-off treatment resets the clock; an ongoing programme is the honest answer for those sites.
Restricted toxins need a certified handler. Vertebrate toxic agents (1080, cyanide, pindone, brodifacoum-class baits) legally require a WorkSafe Certified Handler. Check PMANZ membership and approved-handler status before booking anyone for rodent work.
