What does the section need?
“Lawn mowing and garden maintenance” is really three different markets with three different price logics: per visit for grass, by size for hedges, and by the hour for everything else. Pick the stream that matches the section. Each has its own providers, its own prices, and its own Christchurch rules.
Lawn mowing
A regular run on a set day through the long Canterbury growing season, or a one-off rescue when the section has got away on you. Priced per visit, by lawn size.
Hedge trimming
Light trims are cheap; overgrown reductions are not. Hedges price by scale, and the whole game is keeping them on a cycle rather than rescuing them.
Garden maintenance
Weeding, pruning, beds, section clearing and general tidying. Hourly work, not a mow, with one-off visits and monthly plans on top.
Not sure which stream?
If the lawn is the main job, start with mowing: most regular runs include edging and clipping removal. If the real problem is weeding, beds or pruning, that is hourly garden work, not a mow, and it prices completely differently.
Anything you would need a ladder for prices by size, not by the hour: that is hedge trimming. And an overgrown boundary hedge, or anything near power lines, may need an arborist rather than a mower operator.

Christchurch rules that change the real cost
The growing season barely stops. Canterbury’s growing season runs roughly 256 days, mid-September to late May. That is why a fortnightly gap in spring turns into a jungle by the next visit, and why a regular run beats a string of rescue mows.
The green bin has rules. CCC collects food and garden waste weekly, but flax, cabbage tree, bamboo and soil are excluded, and clippings from clopyralid-treated lawns are not accepted at all. Know what you are putting out before collection day.
Green waste disposal is weight-based. Transfer stations charge by the tonne (around $210/tonne at Banks Peninsula sites). A big section clearance disposed through general rubbish is the expensive way to do it.
New subdivisions mean small sections. Halswell and Prestons-area sections commonly run 280–684m²; small-lawn pricing applies. Older suburbs carry larger sections that price into the medium and large bands.
