What's the electrical job?

"Electrician" is really six different jobs with six different price logics. Emergencies are hourly plus a callout, and one local firm actually publishes its after-hours rate. Switchboards and rewires are project quotes. LED upgrades price per light. EV chargers and heat pumps come as installed packages. Pick the job first: each stream has its own providers, its own prices, and its own Christchurch rules.

Right now

Emergency callouts

Power loss, burning smells, exposed wiring, a switchboard that keeps tripping. One Christchurch firm publishes its after-hours rate, which makes it the benchmark everyone else is measured against.

Old fuse boxes

Switchboard upgrades

Ceramic fuses and overcrowded boards cannot carry heat pumps, EV chargers and modern kitchens. A modern board with RCD protection is the gateway job for everything else.

Character stock

House rewiring

Christchurch's pre-war character homes still run on ageing cabling. A full rewire is a multi-day project priced by size and access, usually paired with a switchboard upgrade.

Per-light pricing

Lighting & LED upgrades

Swapping halogens and old fittings for LEDs is priced per light, and NZ guides put downlights at $80–$150 each installed. Design and feature lighting is quoted after a walk-through.

EV charger installation

A wall-mounted charger needs its own circuit and often a switchboard check first. One Christchurch firm publishes a supply-and-install package price, which sets the local benchmark.

Canterbury winters

Heat pump installation

Christchurch frosts make the heat pump the hardest-working appliance in the house. Specialist installers publish supply-and-install ranges; the electrical connection is prescribed work needing certification.

Not sure which job?

Fuses blowing or circuits tripping when you run the heater and the jug.

That is a load problem, not an emergency. It points at the switchboard, and on an older character home possibly a rewire behind it. Book a standard assessment, not an after-hours callout.

Burning smell, scorch marks, or a hot power point.

Stop using that circuit and treat it as an emergency. If there is smoke or fire, call 111 first. An electrician is the second call, not the first. If the whole street is out, check Orion's outage map before paying for a private callout.

How the streams compare

Stream Pricing model Price range Best when
Emergency callouts Hourly plus callout, higher after hours From $150+GST first hour Power loss, burning smells, exposed wiring
Switchboard upgrades Fixed project quote $1,500–$3,500 guide Ceramic fuses, tripping circuits, pre-renovation
House rewiring Multi-day project, quote after inspection $10,000–$15,000+ guide Pre-war homes, degraded cabling, insurance pressure
Lighting & LEDs Per-light rates plus design quotes $80–$150 per light guide Halogen swaps, energy savings, feature lighting
EV charger installation Supply-and-install packages From $2,199 incl GST package New EV on order, switchboard capacity confirmed
Heat pump installation Supply-and-install, install portion certified $1,900–$5,000 supply+install Cold rooms, frosty winters, replacing a failed unit

Christchurch rules that change the job

Registration and certification are non-negotiable. Anyone paid to do prescribed electrical work in NZ must be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board and hold a current practising licence. WorkSafe requires a Certificate of Compliance for fixed wiring work, including new power points. Ask to see the licence, and keep the certificate.

The character stock hides old wiring. Christchurch's pre-war villas and bungalows in Fendalton, Merivale, St Albans and Sydenham still carry early cabling behind the walls, and insurers increasingly ask about wiring age. NZ guides put a full 3-bedroom rewire at $10,000–$15,000 or more.

Canterbury winters size the heat pump. Christchurch gets genuine frosts, and a unit sized for a mild climate underperforms on a minus-five morning. Cold-climate sizing and correct defrost performance are not upsells here; they are the job. Supply-and-install packages run $1,900–$5,000 from local specialists.

The switchboard is the gatekeeper. Heat pumps and EV chargers both add sustained load. On an old fuse board, either job can trigger a switchboard upgrade first, and NZ guides put that at $1,500–$3,500. Budget for the board before you budget for the appliance.

Post-quake homes are mostly modern, pre-quake homes need checking. Christchurch's post-2011 new builds have modern wiring and boards. The pre-quake stock that survived, especially homes that had repair work, is worth an electrical inspection before renovation: undocumented repair-era alterations do exist.
