Most of this costs nothing to drop.

Whiteware, e-waste, paint, batteries, scrap metal: the awkward stuff has dedicated free or near-free routes around Auckland. Add the free annual inorganic collection and the most expensive way to dispose of a fridge is to pay someone to take it. Here's the item-by-item map.

Common mistakes

Paying a removal crew to take a fridge: whiteware drops free at any Phoenix Recycling yard in Auckland (degassed first). A per-item pickup charges $30 to $50 for what costs nothing to drop.

Putting batteries in a bin or skip: lithium batteries cause fires in trucks and transfer stations. Phoenix Takanini runs specialist battery recycling and Echo E-Days take them free. There is no excuse.

Forgetting the inorganic collection: one free collection per property per year, booked online, reuse-first. People pay $150 for a crew to take a couch the council would have collected free.

Assuming all e-waste is free everywhere: computers and phones are free at Phoenix, but TVs cost $20 to $50 and printers $10 to $50. Check the item list before you drive.

Dumping a fridge without degassing: Phoenix only accepts refrigerant-containing items (fridges, freezers, aircons, heat pumps) that have been professionally degassed. Arrange the degas before the trip, or the trip is wasted.

Driving across town when an E-Day is closer: Echo runs free sponsored e-waste collection days in Auckland suburbs most months. Check the calendar before loading the car.

Landfilling reusable furniture: the inorganic collection is reuse-first, and Waitākere Resource Recovery Park runs a reuse shop. A couch with life left is a donation, not a disposal cost.

FAQ

Where do I take e-waste in Auckland?

Three main routes: Phoenix Recycling (7 Auckland yards) takes computers, servers, laptops, mobile phones and small appliances free, with TVs $39.50 to $49.50 and printers $29.95 to $49.95; Echo Technology's Penrose yard takes drop-offs Monday to Saturday; and Echo's sponsored E-Days run free collection events across Auckland suburbs. Check each venue's item list before driving.

Is whiteware really free to dispose of?

Yes, with one condition: Phoenix Recycling takes fridges, freezers, ovens, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers and air conditioners free at its Auckland yards, but refrigerant-containing items must be professionally degassed first. Either way it beats a $30 to $50 per-item pickup fee.

Where do hazardous items go in Auckland?

Auckland Council publishes an item-by-item drop-off list for paint, solvents, automotive products, oil and gas cylinders, and some transfer stations accept household hazardous items. For paint specifically, Resene PaintWise ColorShops are the easier first stop: any brand, Resene free. Batteries go to Phoenix Takanini or Echo E-Days.

How does the free inorganic collection work?

Every Auckland property paying the waste targeted rate can book one collection per year at no extra cost via the council's online tool. Items are collected from on your property (not the kerb), with a reuse-first focus. Exclusions include glass, clothing, liquids, hazardous waste, asbestos and gas cylinders. Apartment and townhouse sites with 10 or more dwellings book through the body corporate.

What is the orange bag rule at Waitākere?

At Waitākere Resource Recovery Park in Henderson, domestic rubbish is free if it arrives in an official orange Auckland Council bag. Otherwise it is $62.58 up to 100kg ($53.19 if pre-sorted) or $440 per tonne over 200kg. Steel recycling and domestic tyres are free regardless.

The short version

Before paying anyone to take anything, check this stream: whiteware drops free at Phoenix Recycling yards (degas refrigerant items first); computers and phones are free at Phoenix or Echo's Penrose yard; Echo's sponsored E-Days run free suburban collection events; paint goes to PaintWise ColorShops; batteries go to Phoenix Takanini or an E-Day; and the inorganic collection takes bulky household items free once a year if you book it. The items that reliably cost money are TVs ($39.50 to $49.50) and printers ($29.95 to $49.95), and even those beat a pickup fee.
