What's the job?
"A plumber" is really six different jobs with six different price logics. Emergencies are an hourly rate plus an after-hours surcharge. Drains are a cheap unblock or an expensive discovery. Hot water is a four-figure replacement with published package prices. Gas is restricted work, mostly quoted. Pick the job first: each stream has its own providers, its own prices, and its own Auckland rules.
Emergency
Burst pipe, sewage backing up, flooding, no water. You pay a premium to have someone at the door tonight, so know your toby and know what the after-hours surcharge buys.
Drain unblocking
A gully trap overflowing or a toilet that will not clear. One Auckland specialist publishes a fixed unblock price with the camera included, which makes it the benchmark for everyone else.
Hot water
Cylinder repair or replacement. Several Auckland providers publish real package prices, from a $1,800+GST low-pressure swap to mains pressure upgrades, so you can know the number before you call.
Leak repair
From a dripping tap to a hidden leak inside a wall. Visible leaks are a standard-hours booking; hidden ones go to leak detection specialists with acoustic and thermal gear.
Gasfitting
Gas hobs, gas hot water, new connections, gas leak repairs. Legally restricted work: only PGDB-registered gasfitters can do it, and most quote per job.
Bathroom renovation
Rough-in, fit-off, and the plumbing behind the walls. Auckland guides put the trades component at $10,000–$15,000 of any bathroom reno, with mid-range projects landing $25,000–$35,000 all up.
Not sure which job?
Water actively spreading, a burst pipe, or sewage coming up through a floor drain is an emergency: turn the water off at the toby and call. A slow drip under the sink or a damp patch on a wall is leak repair, and it will be cheaper booked in standard hours.
No hot water is usually the hot water stream, but check first: cold pipes into the top of the cylinder point to an electrician, not a plumber. One blocked toilet is drain unblocking; several fixtures backing up at once means the main drain and a camera.

Auckland rules that change the job
Most of this work is legally restricted. Sanitary plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying are restricted work in New Zealand: they must be done or supervised by someone registered and licensed with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. Search the public register at pgdb.co.nz before you book, and ask what certification paperwork you will receive.
Auckland prices sit above the national average. Renovation and trade cost guides (Superior Renovations) put Auckland labour at $90–$150 per hour, 10–20% above national averages, and published Auckland plumbing rates confirm it: $120/hr plus a $60 vehicle and admin charge at Matthews Plumbing. Expect the metro premium, and expect travel time across a spread-out city to show up in the bill.
Volcanic ground and clay move your pipes. Auckland's clay soils swell when wet and shrink when dry, cracking and misaligning older drains; drain specialists name soil movement as a leading cause of repeat blockages. Digging new drainage in volcanic suburbs can also mean hitting basalt, which turns a simple trench into rock breaking.
Watercare owns the network, you own your side. Watercare looks after Auckland's public water and wastewater pipes; everything on your side of the boundary is yours. Older central suburbs still have combined wastewater and stormwater sewers, which affects what you can connect and where. If neighbours have no water either, check Watercare's outage updates before paying a callout.
Apartments and townhouses add a layer. In a unit title or body corporate property, pipes inside walls and anything serving more than one unit may be common property. Get body corporate sign-off before booking work that touches shared services, or the invoice argument comes later.
