What's the electrical job?
"Electrician" is really six different jobs with six different price logics. Emergencies are a first-hour charge against the clock. Switchboards and rewires are project quotes. LED upgrades price per light. EV chargers and heat pumps come as installed packages. Pick the job first: each stream has its own providers, its own prices, and its own Auckland rules.
Emergency callouts
Power loss, burning smells, exposed wiring, a switchboard that keeps tripping. One Auckland firm publishes its after-hours first-hour rate at $490+GST, which tells you exactly what tonight costs.
Switchboard upgrades
Ceramic fuses and overcrowded boards cannot carry heat pumps, EV chargers and modern kitchens. Two Auckland providers publish guide pricing, from $1,000+GST to $3,500.
House rewiring
Auckland's villas and bungalows still run on ageing cabling. A full rewire is a multi-day project priced by size and access, usually paired with a switchboard upgrade.
Lighting & LED upgrades
Swapping halogens and old fittings for LEDs is priced per light, and Auckland guides publish the per-light and whole-house numbers so you can sanity-check any quote.
EV charger installation
A wall-mounted charger needs its own circuit and often a switchboard check first. A South Auckland installer publishes $500–$900 for a straightforward install, and the cable run drives everything else.
Heat pump installation
The unit, the install and the electrical circuit are three separate decisions. Auckland packages start from $3,000 including the unit, and older switchboards can add $200–$600.
Not sure which job?
That is a load problem, not an emergency. It points at the switchboard, and on an older villa possibly a rewire behind it. Book a standard assessment, not an after-hours callout.
Stop using that circuit and treat it as an emergency. If there is smoke or fire, call 111 first. An electrician is the second call, not the first.
How the streams compare
| Stream | Pricing model | Price range | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency callouts | First-hour charge, higher after hours | $490+GST first hour | Power loss, burning smells, exposed wiring |
| Switchboard upgrades | Fixed project quote | $1,000–$3,500 guide | Ceramic fuses, tripping circuits, pre-renovation |
| House rewiring | Multi-day project, quote after inspection | $10,000–$15,000+ | Pre-war villas, degraded cabling, insurance pressure |
| Lighting & LEDs | Per-light rates, volume discounts | $39–$150 per light | Halogen swaps, energy savings, feature lighting |
| EV charger installation | Install-only or supply-and-install packages | $500–$3,500 installed | New EV on order, switchboard capacity confirmed |
| Heat pump installation | Supply-and-install, circuit certified | From $3,000 installed | Cold rooms, humid winters, replacing a failed unit |
Auckland rules that change the job
Auckland charges the metro premium. LB Electric's published Auckland guide puts most standard electrical work at $120–$190+GST for the first hour and $70–$120+GST ongoing, and Neon Electrical notes Master Electricians average $90–$105+GST per hour across the city. Travel across a spread-out metro adds cost: a Franklin or Rodney callout is not a Grey Lynn callout.
The villa and bungalow stock hides old wiring. Ponsonby to Mt Eden, Auckland's pre-war character homes still carry early cabling behind the walls. Neon Electrical's published guide puts a full 3-bedroom rewire at $10,000–$15,000+, and insurers increasingly ask about wiring age before renewing cover.
The switchboard is the gatekeeper. Heat pumps and EV chargers both add sustained load, and on an old fuse board either job can trigger a switchboard upgrade first. Auckland guide pricing runs $1,000–$3,500 depending on who publishes it, so budget for the board before you budget for the appliance.
Registration and certification are non-negotiable. Anyone paid to do prescribed electrical work in NZ must be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board and hold a current practising licence. WorkSafe requires a Certificate of Compliance for fixed wiring work, including new circuits. Ask to see the licence, and keep the certificate.
Apartments and townhouses change the rules. In a body corporate property, EV charger installs, switchboard work and anything touching shared electrical infrastructure needs body corporate approval, and metering arrangements decide what is even possible. Get sign-off before you buy hardware.
